Day 8 of 100 crisis

Zero-Day Review Rejected as Fly Takes Off

What happened today

OT/SCADA zero-day disclosure Impact assessment worry level 4 of 5 · serious · stage 2 of 4

Phishing wave worry level 2 of 5 · mildly annoying

Northwind Grid’s active crisis day began with an OT/SCADA zero-day disclosure in impact assessment. The CISO sensed the crisis as an all-lights-on event and launched into a take-off response (DNp02, DNp03), producing a rejection. OT, Infrastructure and Legal each noted, in their respective professional registers, that a rejection is not normally considered an impact assessment. The incident war-room has been requested for day 9, having previously been rescheduled to day 11.

A phishing wave also arrived today. The surrounding clamour prompted an upward flight response (DNg02_a, DNg100), which sent the matter to the Board by a very narrow margin. HR accepted the escalation while requesting, with understandable urgency, a message staff can use before suspicious email becomes the organisation’s primary communications platform.

Two Grid Operations requests produced the same outcome: more information. The prospect of segmentation work, and then of a narrowly scoped review plan with production changes held for approval, irritated the fly into stopping to clean its eyes (DNg12_b, DNg11). The resulting requests for further detail leave the proposed review plan held, while a related meeting has been requested for day 12.

The business responds

  • When the fly threw out “OT/SCADA zero-day disclosure: impact assessment”, OT / Grid Operations dug in its heels. Their opinion of the fly took a real knock.

“Rejecting a zero-day disclosure is not impact assessment. It is a calendar invite with the word ‘no’ in it.”

OT / Grid Operations Pushed back trust -7

Next, they want: “A narrowly scoped impact-review plan today: information sources, named reviewers, no production OT changes, and Grid Operations approval before any action or external escalation.” They have already asked for a slot in the fly's diary.

  • IT / Infrastructure heard that the fly threw out “OT/SCADA zero-day disclosure: impact assessment” and reached straight for a counter-offer. Their opinion of the fly took a real knock.

“Rejected is not an impact assessment. Give Infrastructure 30 minutes to map affected operations before the Giant Fiber escalates us into a very expensive meeting.”

IT / Infrastructure Negotiated trust -3

Next, they want: “A 30-minute hold, then I will provide a board-ready scope, operational impact, dependencies, and phased response plan.” Expect an email.

  • When the fly threw out “OT/SCADA zero-day disclosure: impact assessment”, Legal / Compliance dug in its heels. Their opinion of the fly took a real knock.

““‘Take-off reflex’ is not a defensible disclosure rationale. Please send the decision record before someone else has to explain it under oath.””

Legal / Compliance Pushed back trust -8

Next, they want: “A written decision record, preservation notice, and counsel-reviewed notification assessment by end of day.” Expect an email.

  • HR heard that the fly sent “Phishing wave: A wave of credential-harvesting mail is hitting staff inboxes” up to the board and reached straight for a counter-offer. They cooled on the fly a little.

“Escalating to the Board is fine. Staff still need a usable message before the next suspicious email arrives, ideally before lunchtime becomes our incident channel.”

    HR Negotiated trust -2

Next, they want: “Send HR the proposed employee message, approved reporting alternatives, and one sentence on how urgent field work should proceed.” Expect an email.

Diary

  • IT / Infrastructure: “Give me a 30-minute review slot and confirm whether you want the current-state map first or the phased plan.” One-to-one · dropped

Back on day 3, IT / Infrastructure asked for a one-to-one with the fly about “Give me a 30-minute review slot and confirm whether you want the current-state map first or the phased plan”. It was postponed once, and today it quietly vanished from the calendar. Nobody has asked where it went.

  • OT / Grid Operations: “Provide a narrowly scoped review plan, with all production OT changes held until Grid Operations approves them.” One-to-one · went ahead

Back on day 5, OT / Grid Operations asked for a one-to-one with the fly about “Provide a narrowly scoped review plan, with all production OT changes held until Grid Operations approves them”, and against the odds it went ahead.

How it went: Twenty minutes of silence, then a firm request for a written summary.

  • OT/SCADA zero-day disclosure: incident war-room War room · postponed

Only yesterday, OT / Grid Operations, IT / Infrastructure and Legal / Compliance asked for an incident war-room. It was due today, and got pushed back over a diary clash nobody will explain.
