Day 50 of 100

Communications Request Pauses for an Eye-Cleaning Review

What happened today

Calm day nothing went wrong

Northwind Grid began a calm day, which proved useful only in contrast to International Communications' two-hour request for a holding statement, spokesperson, privacy boundaries and notification posture. The request irritated the fly enough that it stopped to clean its eyes (DNg12_b, DNg11, DNg12_c). Its resulting demand for more information has not reassured Communications, which asked for the statement and spokesperson to be approved before the gaps receive further admiration.

HR's proposed 30-day password rotation produced a different reflex. The idea drew the fly in briefly, then it backed away and stopped (DNg13, DNb01), leaving the policy deferred. HR requested a plain-language notice covering the revised date, employee support route and decision owner. IT and Infrastructure, meanwhile, noted that calm conditions may be the appropriate time to decide whether the schedule reduces risk or simply organizes forgotten passwords.

The Executive Board declined a request for a costed one-page discovery plan within the hour. Requested follow-ups for HR and International Communications are due on day 53.

The business responds

  • HR heard that the fly backed away from “Mandatory password rotation every 30 days” and reached straight for a counter-offer.

“A calm day is not a policy. If rotation is deferred, give staff a date, a reason, and one person who owns the explanation.”

    HR Negotiated

Next, they want: “Send HR a plain-language notice with the revised rotation date, employee support route, and named decision owner.” They have already asked for a slot in the fly's diary.

  • When the fly wanted more information on “International Communications asks: Approve a provisional holding statement, spokesperson, privacy boundaries, and notification posture within two hours.”, International Communications dug in its heels. They cooled on the fly a little.

“Excellent, we will gather more information while the public gathers its own. Please approve the holding statement and spokesperson first, then we can admire the gaps together.”

International Communications Pushed back trust -2

Next, they want: “Approve the provisional holding statement, named spokesperson, privacy boundaries, notification posture, and next briefing time today.” They have already asked for a slot in the fly's diary.

  • IT / Infrastructure heard that the fly backed away from “Mandatory password rotation every 30 days” and refused, loudly enough to be heard two floors down. They cooled on the fly a little.

“A calm day is exactly when we should decide whether 30-day rotation reduces risk or merely schedules thirty days of forgotten passwords.”

IT / Infrastructure Pushed back trust -1

Next, they want: “Authorize a short review today with IT, Security and Operations, with a clear decision deadline and an approved alternative if rotation is deferred.” Expect an email.

Diary

  • Executive Board: “Within the hour: a costed one-page discovery plan with named incident, legal and communications owners; interim 24/7 coverage; confirmed facts and gaps; residual risk; counsel's view; and an exact Board decision time.” Meeting · dropped

Back on day 43, Executive Board asked for a meeting with the fly about “Within the hour: a costed one-page discovery plan with named incident, legal and communications owners; interim 24/7 coverage; confirmed facts and gaps; residual risk; counsel's view; and an exact Board decision time”. It was postponed once, and today it quietly vanished from the calendar. Nobody has asked where it went.
