Day 5 of 100

Fly Reverses Out of Remote Access Decision

What happened today

Calm day nothing went wrong

Northwind Grid’s fifth onboarding day was calm, although IT / Infrastructure’s proposal for multi-factor authentication on all remote access briefly attracted the CISO’s attention. After some hesitation, the fly backed away from it, using the same body circuitry that makes a fruit fly reverse and stop (DNb01, DNg13, MDN). The proposal was deferred. OT / Grid Operations noted, with professional restraint, that remote access is still a door and doors benefit from locks.

Finance then asked for a ranked list of security commitments, including which to keep, postpone or remove and why. The request appeared to irritate the fly enough that it paused to clean its eyes (DNg11, DNg12_b). Finance received a demand for more information, and responded that it could provide it once someone specified what “more” meant, along with a deadline.

IT accepted the deferral as survivable and offered a board-ready summary and phased rollout plan after confirming the affected scope. Meanwhile, OT requested a narrowly limited review plan that keeps production changes off operational technology until it approves them. Security posture rose by two points, largely through the familiar corporate mechanism of everyone continuing to work around the decision.

The business responds

  • When the fly backed away from “Multi-factor authentication for all remote access”, OT / Grid Operations dug in its heels. Their opinion of the fly took a real knock.

“I appreciate the fly reversing out of the room. Unfortunately, remote access remains a door, and doors work better when they have locks.”

OT / Grid Operations Pushed back trust -3

Next, they want: “Provide a narrowly scoped review plan, with all production OT changes held until Grid Operations approves them.” They have already asked for a slot in the fly's diary.

  • Finance heard that the fly wanted more information on “Finance asks: Please rank the security commitments you want preserved, deferred, or removed, with a brief rationale for each.” and refused, loudly enough to be heard two floors down. They cooled on the fly a little.

“I can provide more information, but “more” is not a category in the budget. Please specify the missing inputs and their deadline.”

    Finance Pushed back trust -1

Next, they want: “State the exact data needed to rank the commitments, plus the budget ceiling and decision date.” They have already asked for a slot in the fly's diary.

  • IT / Infrastructure heard that the fly backed away from “Multi-factor authentication for all remote access” and reached straight for a counter-offer. They warmed to the fly, very slightly.

“A deferral is survivable. Give me 30 minutes to confirm scope and affected systems, then I will provide a board-ready summary and a phased rollout plan.”

IT / Infrastructure Negotiated trust +2

Next, they want: “Please hold the next escalation for 30 minutes while I document operational impact, dependencies, and rollout stages.” Expect an email.

Diary

  • OT / Grid Operations: “Request a narrowly scoped review plan that keeps all changes off production OT until Grid Operations approves them.” One-to-one · dropped

Back on day 1, OT / Grid Operations asked for a one-to-one with the fly about “Request a narrowly scoped review plan that keeps all changes off production OT until Grid Operations approves them”. It was postponed once, and today it quietly vanished from the calendar. Nobody has asked where it went.
