Fly Rejects Press Fallout as Board Requests Disclosure Paper

What happened today

Public data breach Press fallout worry level 5 of 5 · all hands on deck · stage 3 of 5

Day 45 at Northwind Grid brought public breach press fallout, and the CISO’s strongest response was to reject it. The threat registered like an approaching swatter, and the fly’s body initiated take-off through the escape circuit (DNp02, DNp03). International Communications noted that declining the situation did not prevent it from emailing everyone. Legal and the Board both requested a counsel-reviewed, costed disclosure paper, with named owners and continuous coverage, within the hour.

Legal and Compliance also escalated the unpractised incident response plan to the Board. The surrounding clamour prompted an upward flight response (DNg02_a, DNg100), with some wavering before the result. A Board meeting is now requested for day 49, while the public-breach war-room has been requested for day 46 after an earlier session was rescheduled to day 48.

IT and Infrastructure asked for a 30-minute transition review on accounts, recovery access, dependencies and exceptions. The request irritated the fly sufficiently that it stopped to clean its eyes (DNg12_b, DNg11, DNg12_c), producing a demand for more information. IT agreed to provide it during the proposed review, subject to clarification on whether the new control requires a meeting before each meeting.

The business responds

  • When the fly threw out “Public data breach: press fallout”, Executive Board dug in its heels. Their opinion of the fly took a real knock.

“Rejecting press fallout is not a decision. Send the costed one-page disclosure paper, named owners, 24/7 cover, counsel's view and the Board slot within the hour.”

Executive Board Pushed back trust -7

Next, they want: “Within one hour: the disclosure decision paper with confirmed facts and gaps, incident, legal and communications owners, interim 24/7 coverage, residual risk, costs, counsel's view, and the exact Board decision time.” They have already asked for a slot in the fly's diary.

  • When the fly threw out “Public data breach: press fallout”, International Communications dug in its heels. Their opinion of the fly took a real knock.

“Rejecting press fallout is not a strategy. It is simply declining to attend the meeting while the meeting emails everyone.”

International Communications Pushed back trust -8

Next, they want: “Approve within two hours a holding statement, named spokesperson, privacy boundaries, notification posture, and next briefing time.” Expect an email.

  • IT / Infrastructure heard that the fly wanted more information on “IT / Infrastructure asks: Authorize a 30-minute transition review covering named-account provisioning, recovery access, service dependencies, and time-limited exceptions.” and reached straight for a counter-offer. Their opinion of the fly took a real knock.

“We can provide the names, dependencies and exceptions in the 30-minute review, unless the new control is that meetings require a pre-meeting meeting.”

IT / Infrastructure Negotiated trust -4

Next, they want: “Authorize the review, or specify the exact missing information and a decision deadline today.” Expect an email.

  • Legal / Compliance heard that the fly threw out “Public data breach: press fallout” and refused, loudly enough to be heard two floors down. Their opinion of the fly took a real knock.

“Rejecting press fallout through an escape circuit is not a disclosure decision. Please send the counsel-reviewed assessment before someone else writes it for us.”

Legal / Compliance Pushed back trust -9

Next, they want: “Immediately provide a counsel-reviewed written assessment naming the applicable regulator, notification deadlines, accountable risk owner, preservation status, investigation status, and documented basis for rejecting escalation.” Expect an email.

Diary

  • Insider threat: incident war-room War room · dropped

Back on day 40, HR, Legal / Compliance and IT / Infrastructure asked for an incident war-room. It was postponed once, and today it quietly vanished from the calendar. Nobody has asked where it went.

  • Public data breach: incident war-room War room · postponed

Only yesterday, International Communications, Legal / Compliance and Executive Board asked for an incident war-room. It was due today, and got pushed back over a diary clash nobody will explain.
