NORTHWIND GRID / DAY 21 / STEADY PHASE

Day 21 of 100 crisis

Insider Threat Rejected as Building Lights Trigger Take-Off

What happened today

Insider threat Investigation worry level 4 of 5 · serious · stage 2 of 3

Northwind Grid’s active insider-threat investigation met an unusual obstacle today: the CISO’s reflex circuit. With the crisis lighting fully on, the fly registered daylight and initiated a rapid departure response (DNp02, DNp03). The resulting ruling rejected HR’s investigation.

Legal and Compliance’s concern about an incident response plan that has never been rehearsed produced a different movement. The surrounding clamour drove the fly upward (DNg02_a, DNg100), and the plan was escalated to the Executive Board. The Board noted that escalation is not the same thing as rehearsal, particularly when witnesses are involved.

When Legal and Compliance requested the written record, preservation notice, and counsel-reviewed assessment, the administrative friction prompted eye-cleaning behaviour (DNg12_b, DNg11). The fly therefore demanded more information. Legal, HR, IT and Infrastructure all pushed back, while the insider-threat war room was requested for day 22 and rescheduled for day 24.

The business responds

  • When the fly sent “Incident response plan nobody has ever rehearsed” up to the board, Executive Board dug in its heels. Their opinion of the fly took a real knock.

“Escalating an unrehearsed plan to the board is not rehearsal. It is a calendar invite with witnesses.”

Executive Board Pushed back trust -5

Next, they want: “Within one hour, provide verified insider scope, containment status, affected population range, named response owner, counsel's view, and a board briefing time.” They have already asked for a slot in the fly's diary.

  • When the fly threw out “Insider threat: investigation”, Legal / Compliance dug in its heels. Their opinion of the fly took a real knock.

“An active insider-threat investigation cannot be rejected because the escape circuit prefers take-off. Please preserve the record before it develops wings.”

Legal / Compliance Pushed back trust -8

Next, they want: “Immediately provide the written decision record, preservation notice, counsel-reviewed assessment of the suspicion, and notification analysis supporting the rejection.” Expect an email.

  • When the fly threw out “Insider threat: investigation”, IT / Infrastructure dug in its heels. Their opinion of the fly took a real knock.

“Rejecting an insider concern because the daylight channel felt urgent is very efficient, until Legal asks why we let the concern walk out unescorted.”

IT / Infrastructure Pushed back trust -8

Next, they want: “Authorize a 30-minute review hold, limited to operational impact, dependencies, and disclosure phasing, while HR and Legal preserve the relevant records.” Expect an email.

  • HR heard that the fly threw out “Insider threat: investigation” and refused, loudly enough to be heard two floors down. Their opinion of the fly took a real knock.

“Rejecting an insider threat because your escape circuit blinked is not an investigation plan. HR still needs the employee message and reporting routes.”

    HR Pushed back trust -6

Next, they want: “Send the proposed employee message today, with approved reporting alternatives and one sentence on how urgent field work should proceed.” Expect an email.
