NORTHWIND GRID / DAY 18 / STEADY PHASE
Breach Remediation Rejected on Take-Off Reflex
What happened today
Public data breach Remediation worry level 5 of 5 · all hands on deck · stage 4 of 5
Northwind Grid remained in an active public breach remediation crisis. When remediation reached the CISO fly through International Communications, the risk registered like a swatter descending nearby. Its body triggered an immediate escape response (DNp03, DNp02, DNp11), and remediation was rejected.
A proposal for multi-factor authentication across remote access was, inexplicably, appealing enough for the fly to back away and stop (DNb01, DNg13). The result was a deferral. When International Communications asked for a decision date and a safe pilot scope, the request proved irritating; the fly paused to clean its eyes (DNg11, DNg12_b) and demanded more information.
Departments pushed back with unusual consistency. IT noted that the MFA decision had retreated into a cupboard, while Legal observed that take-off was not a closure plan. The breach war-room was rescheduled for day 21, with a new request recorded for day 19.

International Communications asks: Please provide a decision date and a communications-safe pilot scope before the auditors ask us about it.
Why the fly did that
Strongest drive was friction via the irritation channel; activation settled on DNg11, DNg12_b (grooming descending neurons: the fly stops to clean its eyes), conviction 0.33.

The business responds
-
When the fly backed away from “Multi-factor authentication for all remote access”, OT / Grid Operations dug in its heels. Their opinion of the fly took a real knock.
“Deferring MFA during remediation is not caution. It is backing out of the room while the alarm is still ringing.”
OT / Grid Operations Pushed back trust -8
Next, they want: “Today: a named owner, decision deadline, scope of remote access covered, and confirmation that no production access changes occur without Grid Operations approval.” They have already asked for a slot in the fly's diary.
-
When the fly threw out “Public data breach: remediation”, Legal / Compliance dug in its heels. Their opinion of the fly took a real knock.
“Rejecting remediation because the Giant Fiber selected take-off is not a closure plan. It is a future exhibit with wings.”
Legal / Compliance Pushed back trust -8
Next, they want: “By end of day, provide a written remediation decision record, preservation confirmation, and counsel-reviewed notification assessment stating the basis for rejecting further action.” Expect an email.
-
When the fly threw out “Public data breach: remediation”, Executive Board dug in its heels. Their opinion of the fly took a real knock.
“Rejecting remediation is not remediation. It is a meeting outcome wearing a lanyard.”
Executive Board Pushed back trust -8
Next, they want: “Within one hour, provide the verified customer-impact range, containment status, remediation owner, costed recovery plan, counsel's disclosure view, spokesperson, and board briefing time.” Expect an email.
-
International Communications heard that the fly threw out “Public data breach: remediation” and refused, loudly enough to be heard two floors down. Their opinion of the fly took a real knock.
“Rejecting remediation during a public breach is not restraint. It is letting the press office bring a mop to a flooded basement.”
International Communications Pushed back trust -8
Next, they want: “Approve a public remediation update, named spokesperson and next briefing time within two hours.” Expect an email.
-
When the fly backed away from “Multi-factor authentication for all remote access”, IT / Infrastructure dug in its heels. Their opinion of the fly took a real knock.
“We have a public breach, and the MFA decision has backed slowly into a cupboard. Please make the cupboard less strategic.”
IT / Infrastructure Pushed back trust -9
Next, they want: “Authorize immediate MFA rollout for remote access, with a 30-minute review hold limited to operational dependencies, outage risk, and phased exceptions.” Expect an email.

Audit evidence checkpoint
Audit checkpoint · dropped
Back on day 11, Legal / Compliance, OT / Grid Operations and Finance asked for an audit checkpoint. It was postponed once, and today it quietly vanished from the calendar. Nobody has asked where it went.
-
OT / Grid Operations: “Send the narrowly scoped audit review plan today, including affected assets, evidence sources, named reviewers, and confirmation of no production changes or escalation without Grid Operations approval.”
One-to-one · dropped
Back on day 11, OT / Grid Operations asked for a one-to-one with the fly about “Send the narrowly scoped audit review plan today, including affected assets, evidence sources, named reviewers, and confirmation of no production changes or escalation without Grid Operations approval”. It was postponed once, and today it quietly vanished from the calendar. Nobody has asked where it went.

Board review of the security programme (day 14)
Board review · went ahead
The board review went ahead, as it always does: the board sits whatever it thinks of the fly.
How it went: Held. Two people attended and one of them was the fly.

Public data breach: incident war-room
War room · postponed
Only yesterday, International Communications, Legal / Compliance and Executive Board asked for an incident war-room. It was due today, and got pushed back over a diary clash nobody will explain.
